On June 05, 2019, fifty girls and their coaches celebrated the completion of the 2019 Girls Coach Girls Run (GCGR) program by finishing a 5K together at the scenic Surf Club in Madison, CT.
GCGR is a three-tiered peer mentoring program that was developed by an adolescent clinical psychologist and a licensed clinical social worker that follows a curriculum rooted in the academic research on the emotional development of girls. The program is designed to teach participants at every level leadership skills, increase self-esteem, enhance their own interpersonal competencies, and teach healthy lifestyle choices. At the end of the 6-week program all of the participants participate in a 5K Fun Run as their final activity together.
High School juniors and seniors, who will be the program Head Coaches, are trained on the program curriculum which they will teach to the 8th grade girl participants who will then become their Assistant Coaches. After this training is completed the high school and 8th grade girls lead the 4th graders through the curriculum and activities. GCGR promotes and encourages inter-town community building by offering the program to neighboring towns on the Connecticut Shoreline.
